Great Article from Wired.com about why Black Market Entrepreneurs matter

07 Jan

I first read this article in my paper copy of the magazine WIRED (Yes, I know….I know…I'll plant a tree) and thought it'd be worth sharing.

It's something that I have known for a long time, but the quantitative aspect of it being revealed makes it a good read. For those of you who are new to the idea, it's worth reading.

Having said that, I do not promote or support piracy or knock-offs as they disrupt established mainstream economies and artificially inflate the prices of consumables and good. However, there are examples where corporations team up with black markets to allow products that are needed but would not necessarily appeal to the main stream to flow out to those who need it. It is also a great source of innovation.

It has long been known that the marginal of society define the society and the direction of the society. It is not just a disruptive movement, but rather a rattling of the norm which during the adjustment period, establishes new ways to do business or new products which make life more efficient…for most.

This chart (taken from the online article without permission but credited to wired.com) highlights the distribution and size of what the journalist Robert Neuwirth refers to as System D (D for Débrouillard, the French term for what is known in the modern American connotation as a hustler or someone who easily adapts to any situation) in his new book Steal of Nations: The global Rise of the Informal Economy

Equations for Marriage…because love + love Doesn’t always equal a happy marriage!

26 Oct

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am dedicated to all things marriage.  Anyone who knows me, also knows that I am very sarcastic.

An Australian Professor Tony Dooley created a Mathematical Formula meant to tell you 1) at what age you should start dating someone seriously and 2) how long after dating, you should get engaged.  It is dubbed the fiancée formula…haha!

The equation is rather simple, but it'd be tedious to process so the math department of New South Wales posted the full formula as well as other tips for those who can read and own a calculator who want to compute it.

The rest of you can use these guidelines from the document:

"As an offshoot of wider research, UNSW statistician Professor Bruce Brown, has calculated a model which gives men a 37% success rate of finding the best partner from a pool of marriage prospects – not bad odds given the divorce rate is predicted to rise as high as 50% for current brides and grooms.*

To work out when you, or your man, should pop the question, follow the process below:

The P-Diddy Effect: Preppy facade with a bad boy demeanor

23 Oct

So this past week, I came across this video which is an animation which used Text-to-Speech technology to simulate the dynamics between a young lady and young man in today's day and age.  The clip is clearly portraying a young black mid-twenties man and woman engaging in a discussion about their relationship, specifically why he is unable/unwilling to move to the next level and she essentially serves as the voice of "reason" highlighting the flaws of his argument.
